Walmart came to Mexico in 1991 and joined with Cifra to offer “Everyday Low Prices” in more locations. In 1997 Walmart acquired all of Cifra’s shares. Walmart entered Central America in 2005 through a joint venture with La Fragua of Guatemala and CSU of Costa Rica, which already operated hypermarkets under the names Hipermás in Costa Rica and Hiper Paiz in Guatemala.
In 2010 Walmart acquired all of the shares of Central America and in May 2011 introduced its Walmart brand in Central America and converted the 16 hypermarkets operating at that time into Walmart Stores.
