In 1867 Jules Delhaize and Jules Vieujant opened the first store in Charleroi. That was the beginning of a long career; in 1914 Delhaize already had 500 stores in Belgium. 1957 was a milestone for Delhaize and especially for the food retail sector. That year Delhaize opened the first supermarket in world history to offer full self-service. Today there are more than 800 stores in the Delhaize network in Belgium and Luxembourg.
